Types of Fishing Floats: Fishing floats are broadly classified into two categories based on fishing methods: soft floats and hard floats. Soft floats are mainly found in traditional Chinese fishing methods. A soft float is defined as a type of float that marks the fishing line. Hard floats are primarily found in the Japanese suspended fishing method. This method later spread to Taiwan, forming a unique Taiwanese fishing style, which then entered mainland China. Finally, based on local customs, it evolved into the unique Hua-style fishing method. A hard float is defined as a marker that exists independently of the fishing line. As of 2014, the term "fishing float" generally refers to a hard float. Structure of Fishing Floats: A fishing float (hard float) mainly consists of three parts: the float tip, the float body, and the float stem. The float tip is further divided into three types based on whether it is hollow or solid: "soft tip," "hard tip," and "dragon/phoenix tip."
Soft tips are mostly hollow and made primarily of PVC and other plastic materials. They have relatively high buoyancy but relatively low sensitivity, resulting in a delayed response to fish bites.
Hard-tailed floats are mostly made of fiberglass, offering relatively low buoyancy but high sensitivity, providing timely responses to fish bites.
Dragon-and-phoenix-tailed floats combine hard and soft materials, offering moderate buoyancy and high sensitivity, but requiring some skill and experience to accurately detect fish bites.
Float bodies can be categorized by material: balsa wood, straw, bird feathers, new materials, and composite materials.
Bald wood floats typically use coarser, lighter woods, such as balsa, paulownia, and tung. Balsa wood is widely used due to its wide availability, light weight, abundant resources, and low price.
Straw floats typically use lightweight, durable straw bark or core material, such as reeds, pith paper, and thatch. Reeds are the most common.
Bird Feathers: Generally made from the tail feathers of birds, primarily peacock feathers and goose feathers.
New Materials: Primarily made from materials such as PE, PVC, and EVA.
Assembled Floats: Often made by joining two or more materials.
Float Stems: Roughly categorized as carbon fiber, bamboo, or steel. Different stem materials result in different weights. A heavier stem lowers the float's center of gravity, shortening the time it takes for the float to stand upright after entering the water—a phenomenon known as "faster turning." When float fishing, a fast-turning float provides timely and accurate bite signals. However, because floats with excessively heavy stems descend too quickly, they are less suitable for surface fishing. As of 2014, carbon fiber stems were the most common.
Material Characteristics: Balsa Wood: The lightest type of wood. Its production is scattered, and it is graded based on weight, with higher grades being lighter. High-grade balsa wood in China generally comes from South American countries. The advantages of using balsa wood for floats include its suitable weight, ability to overcome wind resistance, stability, good sensitivity, and excellent stability. It also exhibits characteristics such as not deforming or cracking even after prolonged immersion in water and exposure to sunlight. Balsa wood floats commonly found on the market are generally processed using bleaching and carbonization techniques. Their characteristics vary. Unbleached balsa wood has a light brown wood grain and offers the best stability. Bleached balsa wood has higher buoyancy but tends to absorb water after prolonged immersion. Carbonized balsa wood is lighter and has even greater buoyancy, but the float body becomes brittle and prone to breakage.
Reed, a widely distributed and common plant, has lightweight reed stalks, making it an ideal material for fishing floats. The main characteristics of reed floats are uniform weight, moderate buoyancy, strong resistance to interference, and high sensitivity: fish bites are accurately detected and responded to quickly. The float body is usually slender and descends smoothly. Common reed floats on the market also undergo processes such as dehulling and carbonization. Dehulled reeds require high-quality waterproof paint to prevent water absorption, but the buoyancy of the same float type will be significantly increased after dehulling. Carbonized reeds become lighter, but the float becomes brittle and prone to breakage.
Peacock feather floats come in two types: hard-feather floats (with shell) and soft-feather floats (without shell). Hard-feather floats are heavier, requiring a larger volume to accommodate more lead, resulting in decreased sensitivity. Applying paint without increasing volume is also very difficult. Peacock feathers without shells are quite light, and because large-diameter peacocks are rare, most floats with no shell are small in diameter. Most peacock feather floats are made into slender, elongated shapes.
Floats made from this material provide accurate and stable signals. Soft-feather, shell-less floats are particularly effective for fishing for wary fish.
